Gonorrhea is a STI (sexually transmitted infection) caused by the microorganism “Neisseria gonorrhoeae” which can cause infection in the genitalia, rectum, and throat.
Most of the infected people are asymptomatic (50-80%) and the commonest symptom is genital or rectal discharge.
The transmission of gonorrhea occurs via having vaginal, anal, or oral sex with asymptomatic or symptomatic sexual partners. Symptoms of gonorrhea usually develop within about 1-2 weeks after infection.
Nowadays, CDC recommended using molecular techniques for example NAAT test, and the PCR test to detect gonorrheal infection due to their high specificity and accuracy.
Gonorrhea can be easily cured with the proper injected antibiotics (Ceftriaxone) or oral antibiotics (Cefixime). The test of cure is not recommended.
Untreated gonorrhea can cause severe complications such as acute epididymitis or acute orchitis in males or Pelvic Inflammatory Diseases, and Infertility in females.
